Fuck the Police.
But also, $18.75 is a pittance. Amazing how cheaply these people can be bought up.
Goddamn that's low
In Illinois the state is almost bankrupt because they're shelling out 250k pension checks per officer per year because of some overtime loophole
I bet theyre eligible for a full pension in less than 20 years. In the State of Alaska, they fully vest in 10 years and can retire at 50. Meanwhile they keep cutting bennies to every other public employee.
It's everyone here. All the state employees vest early and collect pretty enormous checks. All you have to do is put in overtime on your last year working and you collect based off that inflated income forever. We now have by far the biggest pension crisis in America and even upping the tax rates to surpass CA won't actually fix it, lol
On closer exam, the teachers are actually the biggest liability by a good margin but all the ones I know (downstate) make dog shit. We have a ton of them though. Some of my (very rural) high school classes had literally 4 students and a teacher in them
Public elEmployees in Alaska lost their pensions about 10 years back and we now have 401k type retirement accounts.
About 3 years back they were considering a bill to restore pensions to all public employees. I went to the committee hearings and testified on behalf of doing so. In terms of testifiers it was basically me and about 60 cops in uniform, with their guns and everything, probably on duty and getting paid to be there.
Alaska has a 60 billion dollar fund that they use to pay out dividends to everyone who has lived in the state for 2 years or more. They could cover pensions with ease if that was a priority.
Anyhow, the bill ended up getting amended during the committee hearing to restore pensions only for first responder. They also lowered the retirement age and years of service required for a full payout on account of the "psychological toll" of the police. It was wall to wall performative speeches from the committee members to boot lick the gun toting assholes in uniform. Honestly disgusting
Don't forget the great benefits, overtime you can often create for yourself, and functional immunity from anything short of a serious felony.
I was running a residential concrete crew about 4 years ago earning $23 /hour no benefits. One of the laborers got a job as a CO in the county jail, $26.50 an hour plus benefits. I told my boss I am not coming back after the Winter lay off, went to find prevailing wage that Spring.
I started saving as much as possible because concrete in Minnesota is seasonal work for most. I screwed myself in my early twenties living like a big shot during the Summer only to barely scrape by in the Winter.
I have several friends that went into the mechanical trades. Low voltage electrician and pipe insulators do pretty well without the backbreaking activities the rough trades do. I recommend everyone going into the trades goes into elevator installation. It's lots of travel and heights, but they have 100% union participation and it's always comfy working conditions.
