Nah, there's several honest to god 2000s web comics that don't adhere to this. Perry Bible Fellowship, Gone with the Blast Wave, Gunshow, Nedroid I think runs that long.
It is however a thing for pretty much every gaming comic and holds true for today, barring noted exception Akward Zombie and probably the one KC Green did I haven't read that.

A bit more niche but The Unfeasable Adventures of Beaver and Steve was pretty great from my recollection.
