A couple come to mind. I made a post about how this it's a very suburban white American thing to insist every kid should have their own bedroom when that's not anything close to normal historically. This was inspired by a friend of mine who is buying a house that has two more bedrooms than people (and they're not having any more kids). Not to mention I'm old enough that I have friends who have multiple kids and everyone thinks it's just beyond the pale to force kids to share a bedroom, even if the parents can't really afford more rooms. I stand by my position, but you all seemed to really not like this one.

I also said the Falklands should go back to Argentina, because fuck Nonce Island and the whole idea of overseas colonies. It's also a military weakness for Argentina that the UK (and so by extension the US/NATO) has an island off it's a coast. OTOH, Argentina is also a settler colonial nation so it's not like they have a "right" to it either. And yeah, about 2,000 people live there now and presumably they would have to either become Argentinian or move back to the UK. So it's admittedly a mixed bag.

So what are your least popular takes? This is all in good fun so I'll remove any comments that try and make this a struggle session.

A long while ago I made a post asking for folks to consider avoiding intelligence based insults as they are just another brick in the ableist wall that is our culture. Also they're just plain lazy, also they don't actually get at any reasons why you're criticizing someone unless you're criticizing someone for not being 'smart enough' in which case fuck you.

The original post was "Stuff like “stupid, idiot, moron, dumb,” you know the ones. If you’re insulting someone for their shitty garbage beliefs and all you can manage to come up with is ways to insult their intelligence, appearance, or other aspect about them that has nothing to do with their cruelty and shittyness, you should maybe reevaluate." (I can't find it but pretend I put that meme about body shaming where the insult bounces off the mirror and hurts someone innocent) Basically, if you think the reason that nazi is a nazi is because they're dumb, you're doing yourself a disservice. You're failing to understand how they got to where they are, why they're there, and failing to analyze their politics.

No one really met with what I was saying at face value, most of what I got was complaints of tone policing and people calling me an idiot because haha wow so funny meme

Those insults are technically ableist but most people don't think of disabled people when you call Biden a fucking idiot. I'm unsure of the value of disarming ourselves of the ability to call chuds stupid. I agree it would be nice to live in a world where intelligence measurement isn't a bludgeon but I don't think we're there yet, or even approaching it.

Yeah, and when you start trying to avoid insults like these you really realize just how much you (or at least I) relied on them previously, which is pretty telling about what these insults reinforce in our culture, what kinds of value judgements become implicit
