A couple come to mind. I made a post about how this it's a very suburban white American thing to insist every kid should have their own bedroom when that's not anything close to normal historically. This was inspired by a friend of mine who is buying a house that has two more bedrooms than people (and they're not having any more kids). Not to mention I'm old enough that I have friends who have multiple kids and everyone thinks it's just beyond the pale to force kids to share a bedroom, even if the parents can't really afford more rooms. I stand by my position, but you all seemed to really not like this one.

I also said the Falklands should go back to Argentina, because fuck Nonce Island and the whole idea of overseas colonies. It's also a military weakness for Argentina that the UK (and so by extension the US/NATO) has an island off it's a coast. OTOH, Argentina is also a settler colonial nation so it's not like they have a "right" to it either. And yeah, about 2,000 people live there now and presumably they would have to either become Argentinian or move back to the UK. So it's admittedly a mixed bag.

So what are your least popular takes? This is all in good fun so I'll remove any comments that try and make this a struggle session.

Celebrating Dorner is pretty wack especially considering how hard he appealed and you know, killing the daughter of his lawyer and her fiance (not cops). The cops he did kill was during shootouts and not part of some targeted, vigilante-esque move. He's also still, you know, a cop? And oooo wow he filed some paperwork after watching someone get kicked in the face what a hero

0 tears shed for the officers he killed and burning down the cottage he was in was messed up but ACAB means ALL COPS

A long while ago I made a post asking for folks to consider avoiding intelligence based insults as they are just another brick in the ableist wall that is our culture. Also they're just plain lazy, also they don't actually get at any reasons why you're criticizing someone unless you're criticizing someone for not being 'smart enough' in which case fuck you.

The original post was "Stuff like “stupid, idiot, moron, dumb,” you know the ones. If you’re insulting someone for their shitty garbage beliefs and all you can manage to come up with is ways to insult their intelligence, appearance, or other aspect about them that has nothing to do with their cruelty and shittyness, you should maybe reevaluate." (I can't find it but pretend I put that meme about body shaming where the insult bounces off the mirror and hurts someone innocent) Basically, if you think the reason that nazi is a nazi is because they're dumb, you're doing yourself a disservice. You're failing to understand how they got to where they are, why they're there, and failing to analyze their politics.

No one really met with what I was saying at face value, most of what I got was complaints of tone policing and people calling me an idiot because haha wow so funny meme

Those insults are technically ableist but most people don't think of disabled people when you call Biden a fucking idiot. I'm unsure of the value of disarming ourselves of the ability to call chuds stupid. I agree it would be nice to live in a world where intelligence measurement isn't a bludgeon but I don't think we're there yet, or even approaching it.

Yeah, and when you start trying to avoid insults like these you really realize just how much you (or at least I) relied on them previously, which is pretty telling about what these insults reinforce in our culture, what kinds of value judgements become implicit

Quite a while ago I had some takes about how this place shouldn't celebrate violence. We should recognise violence as necessary but not be overjoyed by it. I don't remember exactly what happened, but a cop got killed and people were glorifying images of it. It was bad and upsetting

Hmm, as someone who dealt with abuse growing up I would say having my own room was the only reason I got through it. If I had to share a room as well, I'm not sure how I'd have survived my childhood.

I'm an antinatalist and I feel that's not very popular anywhere.

Yes, I mean, having your own room has a lot of benefits, it's certainly "better". I guess my opinion is shaped by my immediate social circle where people are shamed and viewed as being "bad" parents if they are not able to provide that for kids.

That makes sense. I definitely don't think it makes someone a bad parent if they can't afford to provide each child with their own room. I just think if it's possible, it's a good option.

I would never say that you're a bad parent if you can't provide a room for every kid. It's a bad economic system, that doesn't allow every parent to provide their children with a standard of living considered normal and good.

It's pretty normal to have 3 kids. 3 kids means 4 bedrooms if you want to give each kid their own room. And even in low COLA areas, a 4 bdr house is hella expensive. It requires both parents (assume both are in the picture and living together working) to work full time at jobs that make decent money. So for most working class people, the choice is either limit the number of kids you have based on the # of bedrooms you can afford (which limits you probably to 1 or maybe 2 kids at most), or have kids share rooms. Of course concerns about privacy and abuse are valid. In my ideal socialist society everyone gets a bedroom. But we're not there yet and tradeoffs have to be made till then. Should a parent take on 2 jobs and never see their kids just so each one can have a bedroom. Sorry, I know good parents who live with shame and/or bust their assess because they feel pressure to have a certain size house.

Right, 100% agree it's a fundamental right. And I definitely support children's rights, I think Americans are waaaaay too into viewing their kids as basically their property until they're 18. I guess I was thinking more about the material conditions people are living in at this moment, as opposed to how things should be.l

not the least popular, but I think camping out on the mod log is peak cringe. hand wringing over random bans is fucking stupid when this site doesn't have ip bans.

    ...

also this site should have ip bans, including for known VPNS :josus-stalin:

If you think a VPN is going to stop any of the 3 letter agencies, then I've got an incredible bridge to sell you. Also, you shouldn't be doing any shit on a public and unencrypted site that you would get you on a list. Your shitposts aren't going to get you on the no-fly list.

Blocking VPNs is the only way ip bans would work. They either could either do that at the beginning, or waste time and pick them off as wreckers switch over to them in the first 5 minutes of even launching a feature like that.

It's super cool the admins / devs / mods have been all in on transparency and privacy shit, but they are too idealistic. This site isn't an irl organization, complete honesty and "fairness" doesn't work on the internet. If you're going to go with an IRL example, it's closer to a low stakes AES. Get a secret police, eliminate FUD, and don't apologize.

        Basically

        CW: self harm / violence

by not cracking down on this shit, the mod team keeps shoving a shotgun in their mouth and pulling the trigger. If they're wondering why their whole dev team burnt-out and half the sitemods quit a while back, that's fucking why.

I mean sure, but every social media site besides this one has ip bans and device fingerprinting for a fucking reason. It's not just for advertising, you have to freeze out toxic weirdos and make it such a pain in the ass to get around moderation that they just move on to somewhere easier. Shit, I think even fucking 4chan had ip bans and that place is a huge pool of rancid shit.

pretty sure a bunch of devs left and the only admin who regularly comments anymore is @ScreamoBMO . They can turn this shit around and I hope they do, I'm rooting for everyone, but they have to get ruthless.

edit: the site is still growing and I am thankful for all the hard work that goes into giving me somewhere to post jpegs of my frothy brain diarrhea. :rat-salute: Wasn't trying to make a dogshit "tEh SiTe iZ dEdiNg" comment.

I'm not a dev or I'd be building ip bans for them, but whatever is easier. Seems like there'd be more off the shelf shit for ip banning. They should consider an invite system too if they manage to find more dev volunteers.

Ah, I see now. I suppose there is no way to have end to end encryption on a social media forum anyway. It could be implemented in PMs but by definition a forum could never operate that way

have you seen the shit chuds get away with on their forums. I know they are friends of the feds but they will write pure unfiltered boomer evangelical rage describing how they are going to shoot each of your body parts with a different gun they own (w/ pictures) I feel like the average American person now is just indistinguishable from a potential domestic terrorist by speech alone, at least the online people.
