Stremio is a one-stop solution for your video entertainment. It's an app available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS.
It instantly plays whatever you want without waiting for it to download.
With Stremio you don't have to worry about all these streaming services or bother going to a torrent site :) You can turn Stremio into a piracy hub with only a couple of clicks.
You must use it with a VPN cuz piracy
Stremio will be connecting to torrent sites like thepiratebay and 1377x and using torrents on these sites.
How to set it up
-
Download it from here and install it.
-
It'll ask you to sign up when you open it. Don't sign up with Facebook. You can also click on Guest Login to use it without an account but you'll lose a couple of features.
-
Now you'll see a puzzle piece, click on it to go to the addons page.
-
From the Community Addons section you will add a couple of addons and that's it! The addons:
- torrentio Commonly refered to as the best addon for stremio.
- 123movies 123movies is a streaming site which can be better than torrenting for more obscure movies that don't have many peers.
- The Pirate Bay catalog Adds a catalog for the pirate bay with extra sort options
- jackett Lets you add and manage your own set of torrent sites
- If you want more (there's a lot) check out this list of addons. It's really good. Almost all of them can be added from the addons section in the app.
I've tried to keep the post short so feel free to ask whatever questions you might have
Stremio has a lot more features (recommendations, calendar and notifications for new episodes) that you can discover on your own.
So cancel your subscriptions and donate the money to libre software :sicko-hyper:
Thank you @Windows97 for your help with this post!
This is pretty cool, I'll check it out. I usually just torrent stuff and then watch it, but this could have its advantages.
I usually just torrent stuff
Yeah, I'm also a boomer like that. My younger friends are like "why not just watch it from a streaming site with ads and watermarks and shoddy encoding?".
No! I'd be downloading this 10 GB movie torrent from rutracker! Even with my shitty internet it usually loads fast enough you can start watching it right away if you enable sequential loading in qbittorrent.
Also, what's the deal with Netflix encoding? My friend swears when he downloads his shows the files are tiny without losing quality. How true is that?
I think Netflix typically uses VP9, which is comparable to H.265/HEVC in bitrate/quality. Of course, if your friend is watching on his phone, netflix can sacrifice quite a bit of quality before it becomes noticeable compared to watching on a HDTV.
The guy claims to not be able to spot the difference on his brand new gamer 4k monitor. That's what surprised me. Maybe it's different in motion than just comparing screenshots statically...
He's probably just not very picky. I think netflix uses about 1.5 Mbps for 1080 video, which equals 675 megabytes per hour or 1.35 GB for a two-hour movie. That's similar to an average 1080 torrent, of course you can do a lot better with BR rips.
Whoa, this is uh, ok. How does this work on the backend? Is it downloading torrents in sequence with really good peers so it downloads almost instantly, then discarding it after you watch it? I have a giant 8TB HDD that I just fill with movies from some trackers and run that through a Plex server (I know I know, I'm going to switch to jellyfin at some point). Does this offer any benefits to somebody who already has a system like that? Can I add private trackers?
Yeah that's how it works but it also supports direct streaming from sites like 123movies, subtitles and a lot more.
The addon Jackett, link in the post, lets you add private trackers but I haven't tried it out. With Stremio you just need to search for a movie/show and start watching, if that sounds better then check it out.
This sounds like honest to god magic. I'm going to try this out just to see it work.
Can I add private trackers?
Just make sure you don't use any trackers that have hit n run rules. I don't think Stremio will seed any torrents for very long at all.
Ah, then yeah I just won't use my private trackers. I care way too much about my ratio.
is this kinda like Acestream, but for on-demand content rather than live hosted streams?
I mean i already have usenet setup so i probably don't need another way to get kicked off the internet, but sounds neat
Haven't heard of Acestream before but yeah they look a bit similar. Stremio has a lot of features though and there are all kinds of addons so not just torrent.
They have a Stremio app if you have a NVidia Shield or android box for your TV. If you don't want to login you have to hit login for the continue without logging in button to appear. It's legit I use it all the time.
NVIDIA SHIELD USERS: If you have trouble having torrents buffer, try clearing the cache of the Stremio app and also see if you can clear up some space on the shield and delete unused apps or check if some heavily used apps have a big data cache to clear.
Cool!
To chapos who don't use NVIDIA, keep it that way! NVIDIA sucks!
Stremio by Stremio isn't available on Google Play on this device. 2018 Nvidia shield cuz I'm a lib. do I have to sideload it somehow?
I decided not to be helpless, here's a link https://blog.stremio.com/install-stremio-apk-android/
Yeah, it's pretty amazing! Way better than plex or torrent/streaming. Thanks for introducing me to stremio!
This just looks like another Plex/Kodi/Jellyfin. A media center with community plugins to support torrent sites. What makes this any different?
I'm fairly certain the others support those things. Almost definitely Kodi supports it.
Pretty easy to use and these are remote addons so you don't need to worry about them...
lmao, pirate shit usually has pretty old aesthetics but i love how their site looks like any bullshit tech startup
I’ve been having issues with Stremio recently with older and more obscure movies where the buffering is too annoying to deal with. Are there any solutions you think I should try? I’ve been running it on MacOS
Unlike FireStick, roku doesn't support sideloading but you can use screen mirroring, check this guide
Glad to hear you like it!
That's be the plan but sadly last time I tried to stream the TV just refused lol
There isn't a stremio app for roku and it doesn't support sideloading unfortunately. Your best bet is to enable screen mirroring in settings and mirror your phone (or anything else you want) to your tv
