When did futuristic change from meaning white, plastic, and egg-shaped to ugly grey or black metal boxes?

Probably around the same time designers subconsciously realised that the neoliberal concensus inevitably leads to Half-life or Snow Crash

Personally I feel like the grey, non-symetrical boxes can be more honest.

Rectangular circuit boards behind a rectangular screen that spends 90% of its time in your rectangular pocket, surrounded by a white, plastic, egg-shaped cowling feels like it's trying to be something it's not.

stuffing phone that I've been staring at since 4am back into my pants

Haha. Yeah. 90% of the time. Crazy, right?

I have never understood the "honesty" thing. Like, I know it's not powered by magic. I don't care what it looks like as long as it works.
