I usually try to not post struggle sessions on here but holy shit, today my mom thought Joe Biden was for free healthcare.

Fucking end me. I'm done with boomers. Had a whole argument about how even if I got myself to where Bernie got, how would I have the political capital, fight decades of propaganda, the two party system, corporations, and convince the right wingers? We have talks about how fucked the system is, and now was told that socialism hasn't done anything and that I'm dreaming. After all this time educating her on what socialism is and what it has done for people. Never again. They can die ignorant.

Theory tells us that the working class isn't going to liberate itself unless conditions are dire enough (even then it isn't guaranteed). Boomers (generally) have too much to lose. Even your average worker is not motivated enough to engage with revolutionary action from within the imperial core. This could change in the future, and there may be alternatives, but when it comes to people being ignorant, I'm no longer surprised at all.

Edit: it does go to say that the shift is beginning, clearly shown by the ongoing protests/unrest in response to police and racial violence. Unfortunately American culture in particular has a real "anti-authoritarian" streak that is a real mountain to overcome. It's going to be necessary to have a real organized movement, and some unpleasant stuff may need to happen to bring about real change. It's not completely necessary for all workers or activists to be a part of it imo, but it needs to exist or nothing will happen at all.

This is how badly Democrats have brainwashed their own voters. They have all of the media manufacturing consent to tell people that if there is a good thing, the dems must want it. They may not be doing the good thing, but they’re so virtuous that they really want to and if it doesn’t get done, it’s the fault of those mean republicans, regardless of if they’re in power.

"X is a good guy. Therefore X must also support [good thing]" is a very real way of thinking about politics among lots of people who don't pay a lot of attention. The good guy image makes it possible for libs and succdems to get away with all sorts of awful shit because of that.

I mean I once saw a statistic where something like 40% of Americans thought the right to free healthcare was part of the US Constitution. They grew up soaking up all the propaganda about the US Constitution being this amazing document full of all the good and important rights and extrapolated from there that something as fundamental as universal healthcare must also be in there somewhere.
