I'm not completely sure, but the large majority of musicians in ska bands are super dorky, and the lyrics are usually pretty awful (although you could say that about like 90% of songs). It tended to attract the dorky weird kids, especially the band nerds, and this is coming from someone who really liked ska for a solid 4-5 years and was a dorky band nerd.
