    I mean, that's the trick, isn't it? Deng rolled the dice, and made the bet the the CPC could keep capital on a short leash without succumbing to its charms. Looked like a bad bet coming into the late 90's/early 2000's, with increasing market reforms, China joining the WTO, inequality skyrocketing, etc etc. But with Xi and his gang winning out (the left of the CPC were heavily behind Xi in his rise to power) things look like they're tacking back to the left, and the market reforms they made no longer corrupt the Party. This is a large part of Xi's anti-corruption campaign.
