It’s because white culture is so dominant that it means absolutely nothing to belong to it, as it’s not something you actively choose into, but something you have to opt out of. So they cling to anything that could be an identity even to the point of caricature because they are doing it to themselves to say they exist.

I have a quebec accent that slips through every once and a while. One time when i was in the states, one of the americans i worked with heard it and started to do the oui oui ribbit zut alors thing. It made me laugh because when french people hear my accent, they just start doing a Mad Dog Vachon impression, which is much more accurate.
