I ask this genuinely because I really don't know. Is Hamas really just their operating governing body who also does shit like also run schools, hospitals, etc.... along with having a military arm. Are they just a military arm for Palestine? Or do they not really have any centralized or formal power and act outside any governing structure?

Please keep in mind this isn't trying to demonize them or the Palestinian people, it would just be very helpful to know more of what they're actual role is when dealing with shitty bad faith "BUT HAMAS" arguments.

    They are a Palestinian political party with a military wing (or arguable a military organisation with a political wing) that has for a while been in control of the Gaza Strip they agreed to form a unitary coalition with the PLO but that was 7 years ago and they haven't gone through with it yet.

    They also have a tendency to sabotage peace talks between the PLO and Israel as they refuse to cede any ground to Israel.
