Right now in Israel Palestinians are dying and confronting daily horrors that we can only imagine. The status quo itself is unbearable for Arabs living in Israel. They have their homes confiscated, their ancestral olive groves torched, constant police harassment and daily face a regime of systematic oppression. Now even this unbearable status quo has been shattered. As a direct result of yet another round of evictions in East Jerusalem that are based on state policies of apartheid and the attack on worshipers during one of their most holy celebrations in one of the holiest Muslims places of worship, the Palestinian people have risen up in protest against this regime of apartheid and persecution. We can no longer feign neutrality. Human rights organizations have spoken. They have spoken clearly and have backed up their claim with overwhelming and damning evidence. This is apartheid and it is clear for the whole world to see. This year Human Rights Watch released a report on this ongoing conflict entitled “A Threshold Crossed: Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution” in which they provide a clear case for apartheid in Israel that dates back to the founding of the nation in 1948. B’Tselem, a preeminent human rights organization in Israel, has made a similar pronouncement in another recently published document “A regime of Jewish supremacy from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea: This is apartheid.” Just as principled Canadians take a stand against white supremacy, the members of this Jewish based organization have put themselves on the line to take a stand against injustice and it is imperative that we act in solidarity with them. These two reports make it clear that this is not a battle between two enemies on equal footing, but a battle between a powerful and oppressive state and a minority that is fighting for the right to exist in the land they have called home for generations. If you have any doubts, I encourage you to read these reports that clearly and concisely describe the brutal nature of this conflict. We live in an age of social media, and for the first time we are able to witness what is happening in Israel in a way that is disturbingly personal. The screams of children and the prayers of mothers and fathers as police break down doors for evictions or as bombs land in residential neighbourhoods are accessible now to virtually everyone on the planet. Pictures of fires raging outside holy sites and the devastation wrought on rubble strewn Gaza. An open letter from a father, “No Father Should See His Children Live Like This’: An Open Letter from Gaza” describing the terror of his family, or messages of a mother saying the family sleeps in one room now so they can die together. These are real messages from real people. Calls for help that must not go unanswered. When I think of those screaming children at night I think of my own child and the horror those families face, but I do not face that horror. Instead I sleep safely at home in a nation that supports these crimes through it’s inaction. It supports them through the sale of very arms that are directed towards the Palestinian people. Canada has only recently changed it’s long held position of unwavering support for the Israeli state at the UN in support Palestinian self determination, but this does not go far enough. It is time for Canadians to join a growing chorus of voices demanding an end to this decades old conflict and take direct action in support of the Palestinian people.
