This is why it pissed me off when people say "The problem is that there are too many people!" because it's the vast majority of people could live comfortable lives and still not over pollute if these rich assholes stopped living so wastefully
And it's always just a hop and a skip from there to talk of birth rates and "excess population"
I agree with what you say, but I also fear that most people will over-consume if they have the opportunity
People are products of their environment. We train people to be consumers, so thats what they become.
