Is there any actual scientific evidence that suggests that fictional child porn lessens the rate of actual crimes against children?

I don't think there's a real scientific study you could do, but in the linked post the argument is made that it's one of the contributing reasons to why Japan has such a lower rate of those crimes than other similarly-developed countries. But then you have to consider that Japan's sexual assault rate is likely greatly under-reported (as it is in most countries, but especially in socially conservative ones like Japan tends to be on this issue). But all of their other crime rates are lower, so I would expect sexual assault to be lower too - but then that damages the argument that lolicon is some kind of "release valve" for potential child predators.

Unless there's research I don't know about, I don't think you can draw a conclusion on this topic logically.

Yeah I don't know either, I've never studied psychology. I just figured that if Freud can say with authority that men want to fuck their moms, someone out there should be able to figure it out.

Also, the crime comparison argument in that link is ridiculous since Japan has lower overall rates of crime anyway and the numbers are for rape, not specifically crimes against children.

It's also frustrated by the fact that Japan simply doesn't consider certain things criminal. Child pornography was outlawed as recently as 2015, but the adult video industry hasn't really changed much and Japanese police haven't been investigating AV producers suspected of using underage actors. Then there's the existence of "junior idols" who often pose for sexually suggestive photographs that would be considered child pornography in any other country but aren't under Japanese law. Unlike with lolicon there's no "it's not real children" defense that can be mounted with that shit, it is 100% legal child sexual exploitation.

I can't provide sources but I once heard that it is the other way round, that animated child porn etc. encourages pedophiles to take things a step further.

It can be compared to how letting people say a few slurs, as a treat, doesn't act as a release valve, lessening the amount of "real racism" but rather makes the step to the far right easier to take.

Man, it's kind of fucked up that there's a mental condition so taboo that just looking up medical research about it might land someone on a list.

I've always thought that pedophilia needs to be treated like a mental illness, with proper procedures of diagnosis and treatment.

Good luck getting pedophiles to admit to being pedophiles

Unless they're twitter reddit users, of course

That's kind of the issue isn't it? The stigma is so strong that it's nigh impossible to study the disease, let alone formulate a treatment for individuals.
