Apparently I'm gonna go full modern woman. Please use a box spring, foundation, or bedframe even if it's a cheap $40 one from a thrift store or Walmart that only raises the bed an inch or two. Placing the mattress on the floor means there's no airflow and direct contact of the mattress (which basically acts as a sponge for all your sweat over the night) can result in mold, dust buildup, and insect infestation from things like mites, fleas, or bedbugs.

      :this:

Most mattresses aren't designed to be put on the floor and the springs/foam will get all fucked up because the floor has absolutely no give, and it will be very uncomfortable. Also please get a waterproof mattress protector/cover so your sweat doest soak through your sheets and into the mattress you sleep on every night. If you really want to sleep on the floor get a Japanese style Futon bed and air it out daily to prevent mold and mites. Or at least use a waterproof mattress protector

Woah woah woah, these sound like perfectly rational arguments for putting something underneath a mattress that didn't come across in the outrage about mattresses on floor I saw before.

Sometimes people can feel something is off without having the words to describe it, and sometimes a broken clock is right even if the clock is materialistic as hell.

Boxspring is a must but fuck a bedframe or rails or whatever unless you really need storage space under your bed. Shit, maybe I need a bedframe to store shit under my bed?

As a longtime boxspring user (why the heck does it have spring in the name, anyway. it's just a wooden box with a fabric cover), upgrading to a frame was nice to shove crap under.
