Was originally going to ask this in c/transenby_liberation, but that comm's sidebar says to put these questions here.

I know generally what truscum are -- people who gatekeep transgenderness using arbitrary medical or psychological criteria -- I'm asking about the origin of the word itself. "Scum" is pretty self-explanatory, but what about "tru?" Is it because they try to tell people they're not "true trans people"?

Feel free to expand on the definition too of course.

Someone who's trans and more familiar with the term could probably give a better definition, but to my knowledge, truscum are people who say stuff like "you're not really trans if you don't experience a certain type of dysphoria," "you're not really trans if you're not on hrt and getting surgery," etc.

so there are folks out there who believe that in order to be an authentic trans person one needs to have high quality health insurance or hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash?
