Idk how much of it was trolls but it does seem tumblr evolved a culture that seems to think the very nature of existence is immortal.
I found some tumblr user once who said they had stopped consuming all art and media because all of it has problematic messaging and only ate rice and beans and spent most of their time meditating in their room that only had a mattress and a laptop in it.
They basically used pop progressive logic to become a early Christian acetic.
For some reason a major subset of horrifically online American progressives both in twitter, tumblr, reddit, and other places too, is very weird about everything and gets a kick out of metaphorically whipping themselves and others online for made up sins.
