I was playing speed chess and I had oodles of time but when I had my opponent on the ropes I rushed things and I missed the mate even though it wasn't complicated or tricky. I still won the game but I'm annoyed with myself.
Somehow I was overly afraid of white playing Rg1 when my queen and king were on the same file and I'd be forced to trade my queen for a rook and white would be on the attack. But Kg7 is key. It means the end was near for white.

Black might have simply resigned after Qg3+. Or likely panicked and I would have gotten checkmate sooner.

It's a forced mate. A forced mate is when one side is driven into a checkmate because they have little or no choice in the moves they can make.

Right, but they do have a choice? Making white sacrifice their queen instead of defend from checkmate doesn't seem like a reasonable choice at all. Why have them do that instead of moving either rook to the second row?
