Sikhs sometimes have a "be ready to fight to protect" mentality due to their people's history. Its why many will carry a small symbolic knife on them to signify a kind of "ready to protect ourselves" type thing. Not all Sikhs will do this though, as not all wear the turban.

So some feel a kind of misplaced duty towards the armed forces. I'm sure someone else can explain this better than me.
