The Lambda mutation, or C.37, appears to have emerged in Peru last August -- and is now being blamed for the country having the highest pandemic death rate in the world.
This isn’t actually a new variant (it was identified in December 2020 and likely emerged months prior) and it’s very, very unlikely to be a vaccine escape.
Whether we get a vaccine escape variant (and whether it will be hard to modify existing vaccines to stop it) is anyone’s guess, but there’s nothing in this post that should change your opinion on it.
