    I know Haiti was charged with massive debt for every freed slave in their Revolution by the French, and that the debt was backed by the US (I want to say that what later became Citibank specifically was involved, but that detail could easily be mistaken). I think that debt was "forgiven" or waived or some shit in the late 2000s? But still, it was a major contributor to their failure to develop their country much after their revolution against slavery.
