I met some long time friends for pizza and beer tonight and i thought it was a fun night but right before we parted ways the two of them held an intervention with me. They said i was bringing up "socialist stuff" too much and it was making them depressed. They said to keep the conversation exclusively to things like games and anime. That if i didnt stop they didnt want to be friends anymore. Have you guys/gals/nonbinary pals experienced something like this before?

I should also say that i was kinda surprised when they brought it up since I felt leftist stuff didnt really dominate our conversations. The last few times we talked i complained about how work felt alienating. I also brought up cuba and palestine a few times here and there. But we also talked about music, workouts, relationships, how other friends were doing, upcoming plans etc. So its not like i was constantly redirecting the conversation to the CIA or something.

Unless you meant how i responded to the intervention. I basically said it was pretty confrontational to hold an intervention over something like this. And that it was kinda hurtful that they would call me pessimistic and ask me to stop being pessimistic when i had never heard this critique of our conversations before.

I'm thinking about the latter. They arent my only friends and I have others that I also talk about imperialism, socialism and organizing with. But these were some of my earliest friends. So it really hurt to hear that I they wanted me to change.

Seniority doesn't apply to friendship. If you're not making every conversation about socialism or whatever then it's possible you've just grown apart. It can suck but it happens.

Is it possible that this guy runs in right wing spaces online, and is reactive to the slightest leftist jargon?
