He's not like, actually based as hell or anything, but he's by far the most based president in Mexican politics in a hot minute.

Yes, the thing with AMLO is that he used to be more radical, nothing like openly socialist, but still. He often accuses his political opponents of being part of "La mafia del poder" which is basically the mexican version of the deep state, he's not that wrong tbh, some of their critics point out the fact that some of those guys are working alongside with him right now (Carlos Slim the richest man in Mexico; Ricardo Salinas Pliego the owner of TV Azteca, the second biggest media company in Mexico; he used to work with Alfonso Romo a friend of Carlos Salinas de Gortari, who I'd say is the Mexican Reagan; Manuel Bartlett Diaz, a really shady politician is right now the CEO of the state-owned electric company).

His relationship with the mainstream media is really bad, so he's framed as an authoritarian that will destroy the mexican democracy, which honestly is bs. Although he's conservative his party tends to be a little bit more progressive. He has accused some civil organizations of being funded by foreign institutions. He has criticized the feminist movement, imo that's his worst take. The management of the pandemic was really bad, but the vaccination plan has been good overall, still he has huge support from a majority of the population (about 60%).

I first started being interested in politics thanks to him, so I have a pro AMLO bias, although I would prefer the 2006 AMLO that lost the election by a little margin.

Seems that way, I don't recall any presidents in my lifetime holding the finger to America by aiding Cuba directly, doubly so if their country shares a land border with america
