Just rewatched the original for the first time in more than a decade. Maybe it's because it got imprinted on my brain as a teen, but I just can't get over how perfect it is. One of the best looking animated shows ever and it's been made twenty years ago.
Maybe if the sequels are bad I should get into the manga or novels or something?
Progressive is shit, Alternative is ehhhh. They're a downgrade in pretty much every aspect, especially writing. If there's one good thing you can get out of them is more kickass music by The Pillows, but you can just as well listen to the OST on YT. I don't think they're worth your time, you're better off just rewatching the original when you're in the mood for more FLCL.
I remember a lot of people being disappointed when the sequels came out. I ended up not watching them. But it looks like since then there have been some people trying to reclaim it, saying it's actually not bad (and maybe even good). So idk.
Here's is a positive and a negative review for Progressive. So def. ymmv.
Personally I plan to watch all three sometime in the future.
Honestly, I personally felt that they weren't very good. Progressive is an attempt at capturing what made the first one so great (FLCL is my favorite anime btw), but failing at it completely. A lot of people say Alternative was less bad, but I disliked it more because the setting wasn't very fitting and it just felt like they were putting Haruko in a random anime. Plus the ending was really bad.
If I remember which one is which, I liked Alternative but didn't care too much for Progressive. The part where the rich all flee to space leaving the rest of humanity to die was on point.
