Even :ancap-good: people were saying that the rebels did the chemical attacks and not the Syrian government. Journalist Seymour Hersh even uncovered this years ago as well, that the Syrian government didn't do the chemical attacks.
Think the tankies mostly just recognized that the media emphasis of the chemical attacks was obvious consent-manufacture for invading Syria, even prior to opinions of Assad
I don't want to discount the extent of Western propaganda that exists or give more ammunition to those clamoring for a more US-friendly regime. But I don't know what we get by focusing on this one attack so much. Like, even if this attack wasn't done by Assad, he's done plenty of other horrible shit. Like, I'd be all for a socialist uprising from below in Syria and I think we should push that opinion too, not just defend the regime.
My understanding was that the Syrian gov didn't do this one but probably did others
