Can be multiple. In my case, I think my sister buying us volumes of Ranma 1/2, FLCL, and watching gurren lagann had the biggest impacts.

    Later on in life but Gundam really resonated with me. I had been a fan of Wing as a child but that was because I loved the robots and big explosions. It wasn't until my late 20's I sat down and watched Gundam 1979 and it really opened my eyes to a whole other world of that franchise. I was pretty shocked how a show that should have been just a vehicle for selling toys had pretty good politics and a grounded, mature, take on war. The franchise is my favorite anime and it's cool how something people would write off as a Star Wars ripoff became like a cultural powerhouse with an actual Gundam being built in Japan.
