I am polyam and don't get it. I think both of the foreground characters have partners pictured in their thought balloons, alongside what they find appealing about the partner. Or are the thought balloons with the words about each other? The fact that they are each ignorant that the other is polyam and dating (that is: available), are blushing in each other's company, and are nervous about bringing it up, might mean they are into each other but afraid of scaring the other off with polyam stuff. The characters in the thought balloons could be themselves or each other with different haircuts though? The faces are all the same style.
Maybe these characters are from a webcomic we have to read to get the missing context
I think the foreground characters are in a relationship with each other, and each has a crush on an additional person and would like to responsibly discuss a poly relationship with the other, but are worried about the other's reaction (the joke being that neither need worry because the other will certainly be happy to hear they are open to a poly relationship)
but neither know the latter fact about the other
