Gotta make sure they aren't the kind of lawyer that'll look at this case and say "might as well plea deal", so try to talk to more than one lawyer to see what options he got

They're not gonna hold him in jail until the court date or anything, probably just has to pinky swear to not leave the city, he'll get a public defender who will do just fine, I'm confident that pretty much any judge would dismiss this kind of thing real fast.
