There's a good Shaun video where he mentions whiteness will always shrink because it's regarded with a higher degree of scrutiny than other racial groups. As in, having a single non-white parent automatically makes you not white, a criteria that isn't extended to other groups.
There are other identifiers that often remove a person from being fully white, like cultural background or religion. Being Muslim is often an automatic "not white" for instance.
Oh yeah, I know how you mean. I saw it firsthand. I had Muslim neighbors from Lebanon as a kid in the 90s and after 2001 the whole town started talking about them differently. (it was a small hick town in the woods and they were the only Muslim family)
