"White" will just expand at the convenience of the ruling class, as it always has. Back in Ben Franklin's time, he described Anglo-Saxons as superior to the "swarthy" races, like Swedes and Germans. Eventually those folks were brought into the fold of whiteness, along with Italians, Irish, and many other nationalities that were not previously seen as white. As someone else mentioned here, whiteness is completely relative and will adapt in order to maintain a system of racial hierarchy for the purpose of exploitation and control.

Lately the ruling class has been having trouble sticking with one group of people to declare the nemesis for any appreciable time. Like it's in a constant flux between Arabs, Hispanics, and the Chinese. If you go troll white supremacist forums, you can see a real fatigue setting in, as they've spent the last five years trying to keep up with who they need to make honorary whites and who is the latest Worst Group. If they don't get their act together, they really could cannibalize themselves.

Was that really something they were freaking out about? Because that sounds great.

Could you imagine though? Like damn I want a snack. Taco trucks. What’s for dinner on short notice? Taco trucks. I don’t feel like getting food for guests. Taco trucks.

It was 2016, because that phrase became very popular in /r/neoliberal which was new then. The guy who said it was like chairman of one of those "Latinos for Trump" groups and went on fox or CNN to say that Latinos or maybe Mexicans in particular were a "dominating culture" (???) and therefore if allowed in, taco trucks every corner.

like a decade ago my dad took me aside and told me about white people becoming a minority and all the “bad stuff” that it will cause. white genocide idea before the term was popular

I think the article is trying to say that it's notable that the white population is declining in total numbers for the first time, not that the percentage of white Americans hasn't declined before.

"white genocide" was definitely a thing in the 2000s and 1990s

Makes sense, given how whiteness is defined it has to shrink, until the whites get together and add another currently non-white group to the whiteness club (my guess is that white hispanics get added next).

My hometown once arrested a couple in the 1950s for having an interracial marriage. The husband was Italian and the wife was Cajun. Whiteness is always going to shrink because of how strict the demands are for what makes a person white.

I mean, that seems like proof of the opposite, the concept of whiteness had to be expanded to maintain white supremacy. Both of those groups are considered white now and they seemingly weren't before?

Oh, the wife was considered white. Yeah I don't know how to articulate my point honestly and I've confused myself. Sorry.

It's no problem if this conversation continued I'd probably find myself in the same place; topic is complicated.

You can already see light skinned Hispanic people who aren't poor are starting to be considered white. At least from what I've seen.

Whiteness in America has always had a component of class to it; as the country diversifies and the the concept can't feasibly expand beyond skin tones it will adapt into the more covert class and cultural signifiers. PoC living in "nice" neighborhoods who enjoy "mainstream" things will be brought into the fold. This will alienate and anger the diehard fascists but overall it will be a net gain that will help maintain white supremacy as it currently exists in the more covert, harder to see systemic forms that benefit the actual "white" people.

I mean this is already happening, look at Saagar Enjeti

I've also personally had a few very unsavory experiences with upper class PoC as someone living in a diverse area. I think it's just that actual classism is becoming more and more of a thing in the US. I think some people see me and assume I should be picking berries or mowing lawns.

There's a good Shaun video where he mentions whiteness will always shrink because it's regarded with a higher degree of scrutiny than other racial groups. As in, having a single non-white parent automatically makes you not white, a criteria that isn't extended to other groups.

There are other identifiers that often remove a person from being fully white, like cultural background or religion. Being Muslim is often an automatic "not white" for instance.

Oh yeah, I know how you mean. I saw it firsthand. I had Muslim neighbors from Lebanon as a kid in the 90s and after 2001 the whole town started talking about them differently. (it was a small hick town in the woods and they were the only Muslim family)
