The fact people are hiding and really, really shifty about their sicknesses and illnesses lately tell me they know things are fucked and they feel at least partially guilty about something.

Why does nobody give a shit about anyone around them?

Because people are told everyday, endlessly that everything is fine. The media will continue to downplay or not even mention COVID. They are beholden to the capital forces that have determined public health is antithetical to the profit motive. So people who are otherwise able to stay home and take precautions (like masking) are pressured not to and told to come back to work because “COVID is over. Coming back to work was what we did before COVID.” I’ll quote what wopazoo@hexbear.net said to me after I posted about getting it.

You cannot get people to return to pre-pandemic behaviors without eradicating the thought of the pandemic in their mind. Eliminating masks, the symbol of the pandemic, is necessary to achieve the ends of a reversion to pre-pandemic behavior.

Edit: I’m also sorry that you guys got it. I wish it didn’t happen to you. Please take care of yourself.

I don't go to work when I'm sick but it costs me a LOT of money in missed wages so i can understand why others will go in

I work construction and tbh I haven't seen anyone wear a mask in a year. I held out longer than most but i, too, am a liberal who caved to the amount of times i was asked why I'm wearing it and asked if i know covid is over.

I should pick up some N95s fuck I'm a bad guy

Why do people insist on going to work or to gatherings when they can admit they are sick?

Depends on what sort of work it is, but some people just can't afford to miss time at work due to paltry worker protections (not enough sick hours or PTO fuckery).

This was me, actually. It wasn't Covid, thank god, but I wasn't able to do over 3 days of sick days without a Doctors note and things are already tight. Thankfully I at least masked up, kept some space on people, and had 10 hours paid vacation.

Our hh tested positive for the first time recently. We think we got it because my partner’s coworker came to work with “a kind of Covid.” His new manager also insists on weekly in-person meetings. One can attend online but it’s difficult to hear or participate, and my partner needs that information to do his job.

The coworker in question, who has had Covid 3 or 4 times now, told my partner “you can’t avoid it” and honestly if you come to work maskless and sick, refusing to even cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough, how is that not a threat?

Yeah. Not going out and spreading shit around when you're noticeably sick and symptomatic is the fucking absolute bare minimum and I swear to god people are worse about it now than pre-covid because they have the "well I rapid tested once and it's not covid so I'm fine" excuse now.

I'm not proud of how long I held out on masking and stuff, but I'm a household of one and I WFH, so when I'm at all sick at least I can just be a hermit and not spread shit to anyone, and I have a stockpile of masks if I absolutely have to go someplace. this winter's covid wave has me wanting to mask again but it feels pointless when historically I've almost exclusively been the one getting sick after family gatherings, not the one spreading it.

My wife caught it the first time last week. And holy fuck does this shit suck. Sorry you're going through this; sorry we are too.

All fucked up, barely testing negative, chock full of fucked up symptoms - she literally just left for work because.... BECAUSE.

    Fuck this system.

Are you swabbing your throat (at least 30 minutes after eating)? Nose rapid tests haven't been effective since before Omicron

Might want to start using nasal sprays like covixyl, xclear (xylitol), or betadine. There's not a lot of studies out there, but what studies have been done show a 60-80% effectiveness in stopping the virus. They all basically coat your nasal passage with a protective layer to stop the virus. Probably won't stop it if you are in a small room with someone shedding virus for a long time, but it should help your odds.

Also DIY fit test your mask if you haven't:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TRCZ8Qnf0Z0

      https://mathburritos.org/fit-test-kit-v1/

And bring a HEPA air purifier if you're going to someone else's home.

If you don't have access to nasal sprays or aren't comfortable with the quality of the evidence, you can also do a saline rinse after potential exposures to mechanically remove virions from your nasal passages.
