It is, primarily. Most of the former Amazon land particularly in Brazil is used for cattle grazing or growing soy, which, despite what right wing anti-environmentalist propaganda will tell you, is by a vast majority used for animal feed rather than human consumption. Though parts of threatened rain forests have also been removed for more conventional cash crops, bananas, coffee, sugar etc.
Most soy is used for animal feed.
Brasilian farmer here. I have only cleared 200 acres of rainforest but grow soy. I cannot speak for other agricultores but the government buys my soy and sends it to a secret factory in the US where they turn Christian men into cat girls. All the bags of soy, all of them, are marked 'comida de menina gata' and picked up by an American army truck in the middle of the night. They point guns at me and say they need more. They always need more.
