Okay so I asked a linguist about this once and here is the short of his explanation (translated so forgive me if I get the specific terms a bit wrong).

It basically comes down to a random sociolect that's perpetuated through the internet. As with any group of close(/r)-knit people, they start to say things differently to whatever standard there may be, think like the little in-jokes with friends or significant other or maybe even on hexbear.

In these types of communities, there's often very few forward thinkers / head of communities who adopt this style of writing for you know, random reason. Some crank(s) started it and the other keep copying it, and then it spreads.

So as far as he was concerned, there isn't really a specific reason. It just so happened to go that way but then the sociolect spread via the internet, which is why you find the same bullshit in germany with the punctuation despite none of these people speaking the first bit of english.

I'm sure there's underlying reasons there, of a few head figures transporting this outward from it's original sources or whatever, but as for why they started it's basically just random, apparently. Could've been all caps for what it's worth.

I mean I asked and from what he told me there isn't really much more to it (disappointingly). Some people started it, now it's a thing. At least on the linguistic side.

Bascially for further reading I think anthropology or sociolgy would be more interesting is what I gathered from it.

It is also about not having very good English reading and writing skills.

Lots of businesses where I am from will put up signs and have random words or phrases “in quotations” because the people making the signs have like a 5th grade literacy level. It’s about how poorly educated these people are as much as some sociolect.

“I love the poorly educated.” -Trump.

I honestly think it's because most people literally don't fucking read. It's not a boomer thing, I've seen a few managers at the places I work write like this or rather you can see how someone winds up writing like this. Imagine getting an already shitty education, working retail for 20 years and never nourishing your mind with anything but Arby's and binge drinking (nothing wrong with that TBH in light of how shitty retail is) and in like that time your English is just going to be fucked
