And they don't want to put them into an animal park. Their goal is to just plop them into the Siberian tundra.

A New Company With a Wild Mission: Bring Back the Woolly Mammoth - The New York Times

A team of scientists and entrepreneurs announced on Monday that they have started a new company to genetically resurrect the woolly mammoth.

The company, named Colossal, aims to place thousands of these magnificent beasts back on the Siberian tundra, thousands of years after they went extinct.

Ian Malcolm was a crank. There was nothing wrong with the science, all of the problems faced by Jurassic Park were a direct result of it being a capitalist venture. In a sane world the dinosaurs would have been released into nature preserves and studied relentlessly for a decade at least before anyone made an attempt to put them into a zoo, but the profit motive drove InGen to try to go straight from the lab to a tourist environment (they also skimped out on a lot of the park's safety features, despite Hammond's insistence that they had "spared no expense" building it).

When capitalism fails, blame "human nature," or "civilization," or " man's hubris," or literally anything except capitalism.

I feel like I’ve been hearing about plans to revive mammoths and thylacines for years now. I’ll stay skeptical.

The good thing is that like most tech enterprises this is probably completely bogus and exists only to bilk venture capital.

The article briefly touches on it but the idea is that these big fuckers stomping around the Siberian tundra will do something to prevent the quickly deteriorating permafrost. There's an interesting video from a few years ago of a massive crater of collapsed permafrost. Like the ground just falling apart. I'll see if I can find it. This shit is a total hail mary though.

Hey - they dream of serious money and great fame. And even in the wildest venture capitalist fantasy - a Mammoth Park with freaky gigantic, deformed hairy things that look like elephants juiced on steroids won't get them that.

We would just bring them back to hunt them in safe enclosed game areas
