Jannetje Johanna Schaft, born on this day in 1920, was a renowned Dutch communist resistance fighter during World War II. She became known as "the girl with the red hair" and her secret name in the resistance movement was "Hannie".

As a member of the anti-Nazi resistance, she carried out attacks on Germans, Dutch Nazis, collaborators and traitors. She learned to speak German fluently and sometimes became involved with German soldiers. Such was her notoriety that "the girl with the red hair" was added to the Nazi's most-wanted list, and she died her hair black to continue her acts of espionage.

Schaft was eventually arrested at a military checkpoint in Haarlem on March 21st, 1945 while distributing the illegal communist newspaper "de Waarheid" (literally "The Truth"). She was shot dead three weeks before the end of the war in the dunes of Bloemendaal. :07:

Previous answer

4 brothers, 3 sisters

To arrive at the answer:

  • Let the number of boys be B, let the number of girls be G.

  • From the first relation, we have B-1 = G as we take it from the point of view of one of the boys, we must remove that boy from the relation

  • From the second relation, we have G-1 = B/2 each sister has exactly half as many sisters as brothers.

  • With a little rearranging, we can get B = G+1 and 2G-2 = B => G+1 = 2G-2 => 3 +G= 2G => G=3

  • We just plug this into B-1 = G and get B-1 = 3 => B=4.

Therefore, there are 4 boys and 3 girls.

This should also be all possible solutions, but if anyone is a real stickler we can check by a 2x2 matrix to see if it's invertible. These linear equations correspond to matrix equations {{1, -1}, {-1/2, 1}} * {{B}, {G}} = {{1}, {1}} and as {{1, -1}, {-1/2, 1}} is invertible (relatively easy to see as we can row reduce it to an upper triangular matrix quickly or just use the 2x2 det formula) this equations has only one solution. There you go. In case anyone forgot why it equals {{1}, {1}} , that's just the constant matrix from the 2 linear equations.

The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker

The butcher is twice as old as they were when the baker was half as old as was the candlestick maker. The candlestick maker is twice as old as the butcher was when the baker was half as old as the butcher is now. Twelve years ago the baker was half as old as the butcher will be twelve years from now.

How old is each of them now?

Like usual have fun :soviet-heart: and remember to dm @Wmill the answer. I may not get back immediately today since I got something to do but I'll try.

early mega ik

    it's genuinely fucked that like armed anti nazi resistance has been TOTALLY washed of its massive communist concurrent in the history of world war 2. the French resistance are very famous and very well known almost ALL of them were communists, the Dutch resistanc that Hannie Shaft was a part of was communist, the Italian resistance who got Mussolini were communist, the Greek resistance was communist, the Yugoslav resistance that was one of the first forces in the entire war to push back the nazis was communist and established their own socialist state post war, the Albanian resistance did much the same as the Yugoslavs, even in Germany the anti nazi armed resistance was communists, and ofc as we all know the Soviet Union did most of the resistance against fascism. you NEVER learn this shit and all of it is covered up in retelling of history. I think like the only non communist resistance was Polish, and maybe the Czechs but I am not too sure on that one, though the fucking Poles were just as bad as the nazis and basically agreed with them on every policy but Poland.

    both before and during the war, the largest resistance to fascism was by communists. the libs literally didn't do shit against the nazis, and literally helped them most of the time in ratting out Jews and the communists. and ofc we all know had buddy buddy the allies got with literal nazis the second the war ended

      and this history is why people say that liberals are fascists. they do not resist fascism, they openly accept fascism even with all their rhetoric against 'totalitarianism'
