I think a lot of it is how much they avoid annoyances that take away from the intended gameplay. Regular save points (always with an upgrade station), full refund of resources for respeccing, a loot hoover from the start, motion blur turned off by default - the biggest annoyance I've had is realistically long elevator rides down into the underground facilities.
Yeah, that's true. It's a very streamlined game, very focused on just trying to be fun. Definitely not the only way to make a game but it worked here I think
