fwiw chicken meat is quite different from pig or cow meat nutritionally. so maybe some people do it as a diet, and call it vegetarianism because of language confusion? i'm pretty sure in some languages vegetarian is the same as vegan for example
When i lived in Morocco, when my friends would tell people they didn't eat meat, they would still get a plateful of chicken and fish.
for some, it's literally just a classification thing. I feel like in some cases, it makes more sense to say 'I don't eat animals' rather than 'I don't eat meat'.
