When I order something online (as long as it isn't something huge like a grand piano), it gets delivered to a nearby corner shop or supermarket, either to be held by staff or placed into an automated locker that opens via code you get sent via text message
Very convenient and I don't need to worry about being home when the mailman's at my door and there's less need for delivery vans to drive to specific addresses

The delivery person isn't the person smashing your packages, I can assure you that mostly happens in the hubs.

Edit: I also don't believe this is some major issue, I just brought it up as an example of the sort of thing a paranoid suburbanite reactionary worries about that would actually be alleviated by living in a sensibly designed city
Pretty sure it's in the fine print that anything shipped via UPS is subject to 10 foot drops between conveyor belts. Not to mention how the packages get stuffed into trucks as fast as humanly possible
we sorta have this in the US but only in limited areas and it's sorta worse because its so spotty. I've had packages randomly be redirected to a local corner store, a (much farther away) local fedex facility, a fedex store downtown, a fedex store like 20 miles out of town, etc. I think UPS has the better system iirc. But mostly things are just left in my building entryway by the mailboxes and that's fine by me, never had anything stolen as long as it made it inside the building (which USPS and UPS do, amazon I think does somehow, not sure about fedex)
I hate saying this, but it used to be worse about 5-10 years ago when we still had local post offices and less private delivery companies.
Instead of text messages, the mailman would ring your doorbell, and if you weren't home, they'd leave a note with your regular mail telling you which post office you could go get your package from the following weekday, and you'd often need to take a bus just to get there.
Now that every supermarket and corner shop is a possible pick-up point you'll most likely be able to get your package during your grocery run 7 days a week
I did get one package recently that was some random supermarket a few kilometers away but that was like 15 minutes on my bike
ya I was always confused about what porch pirating was cause it's not a thing here at all
Usually you can just select a pick up point if you know you're not gonna be at home, or if it gets delivered to your home but nobody is actually home they will just drop it off at a neighbour and if that's not possible either they will just take it back to deliver another time
nobody steals from my porch but the building behind me has the same number just a different street so that unit #5 has gotten some of my deliveries but its all good mis-deliveries here are the fault of the carrier so they keep the stuff for free and i get it re-sent for free
theyve gotten some free guitar cables and even one time a bottle of personal lubricant

I've got a question, do Americans have no awareness of the concept of a Paczkomat? In Poland thanks to InPost they've grown all over the country like mushrooms after it raining. So much so even some backwater villages have them and they operate usually quicker, safer, cheaper, and more reliably than the Polish Post. However it is the countless problems with the Post that makes them better.
Like I know you've mentioned them but I mean the general public, like how alien to them is such a concept? Because honestly I wouldn't be able to live without them.
We have these but they're very rare and all owned by Amazon lmao
