i noticed it happened to me on reddit mobile firefox (fennec).
I can't view any comment thread from a subreddit not on r/popular or r/all without it telling me to download the app, so i've been using libredd.it whenever i want to view any threads on my phone.
Maybe it's a firefox tracker thing, they can't get a rough idea of who I am so they ask for an account to advertise better idk
What is this libertarian bullshit doing here? People shouldn't do all sorts of unhealthy things. They have literal experts working at these companies who are using proven, peer-reviewed techniques to addict people to social media. Stop making excuses for them.
i hate insta and web 2.0 dark patterns as much as the next guy but you don't need to be logged in to view that link
how do you view it then? browser extension? On desktop it just redirects to a page asking for login.
On Firefox? Maybe you're in a B group and getting an even more heavy-handed dark pattern than most rn.

Oh yeah new :reddit-logo: is the worst for it
Then it's what they call "teaser content". It's the free sample that they give you to attempt to get you addicted to their harmful product.
Don't fall for it.
Easy not to fall for it if you refuse to log in
