His lecture series "The Story of Human Language" is a really good intro to the subject (at least to lay person like me). But whenever I've listened to him opine about politics and cultural issues, he's always talks a big game about how society should be egalitarian, but then go off on how black kids need to pull up their pants.
at least he's not as bad as steven pinker i think. so that makes him not the worst pop-linguistics guy
