We got into capitalism vs communism a little bit over dinner yesterday and my mom said "if all those things worked, we'd see them everywhere" and I just patted her shoulder, said "ok, liberal," and reminded her that she grew up during the cold war in which America had a vested interest in painting anything left of Raegan as genocidal fascists.

US Americans love to look around at their dragon's hoard of wealth and think it's because of capitalism and not mostly because of the theft of an entire continent's worth of resources, imperialism and exploitation of the global south, and ripping through non-renewable natural resources at an extremely unsustainable rate.

They aren’t because the US and other capitalist countries make sure they can’t! Guatemala, Nicaragua, Korea, the USSR, the GDR, Bolivia, Venezuela. I mean any country that tried we have stopped

We did see them everwhere. By percent the largest and most successful conutry in the world is communist. The majority of every dollar we spend on taxes goes to keeping it down. That sounds like a pretty strong system of we have to spend so much money to fight it.

Yeah, I regret not bringing up the USSR's industrialization or China's recent good work, but oh well. I at least got to get my pops thinking more critically about China and questioning media narratives. He was impressed by how much I know (which isn't really much, aside from tidbits I remember from this site), so that'll open the door for future conversations.
