    I remember ages ago watching a History Channel doc on Sun Tzu, and they talked about how one of his infamous gambits was to maneuver his own army into a position where they couldn't retreat, in order to make them fight for their lives. The documentary then drew a parallel between this historical moment and the D-Day landings, where troops storming the beaches were basically forced to win the battle or die trying because there was no going back (and if the battle went poorly, the paratroopers would have been extra fucked).

    I have no idea of the historical veracity of any of that, but I think about it a lot.

      That makes sense. Back in the day conscript ar.ies had the good sense to try to not fight rich men's wars if they could get out of it. When it's mostly untrained, moderately willing farmers that kinda thing would probably work real good.
