Winter tires barely cost anymore than regular tires. And it's not an extra expense over time, as it's a consumable item that replaces another consumable. Putting on winter tires doesn't destroy your summer tires, you can put them back on when the season is over.
It's only an expense if you can't actually afford a car and are cutting whatever you can so you can still get around, no matter how dangerous it is. Which is a lot of people, unfortunately.
I think even when people can afford winter tires they often don't buy them because they are so used to being sold bullshit they think they are being lied to when they are told they are important.
If you can afford winter tires, get them. Please, if there were any safety or inspection laws at all they would be mandatory. It's literally like driving bald tires in the rain. It's not if you will get into an accident, it's how fast will you happen to be going and what you are gonna hit when it happens if you don't have them.
The price to swap tires is less than the price to fill up on gas. That is barely an expense considering it's just twice a year.
