So do these people not use winter wheels? Or snow-chains? Cars are shit, but this is just failure to account for weather.

I wanna say that everyone here is a moron for driving in these conditions, but I guess most of them had to. Because of car-centric cities.

Also: why are the streets and sidewalks not cleared, even without a car moving in this place seems needlessly dangerous. Imagine using a wheelchair or being old.

I mean where I live you are not allowed to drive a car in winter without them, that was more what I was wondering about. It'a nort personal responsibility, but just ppl losing their license otherwise. Are cars in thr US just a free for all? I mean it's also about public safety at this point.

The more I learn about the US the more I realize just how much more fucked it is than I already thought. Yeah, in that case the only morons here are the bus company and the cops. (And the companies not letting their employees take a day of for bad weather, and the city for not clearing the roads)

Winter tires barely cost anymore than regular tires. And it's not an extra expense over time, as it's a consumable item that replaces another consumable. Putting on winter tires doesn't destroy your summer tires, you can put them back on when the season is over.

It's only an expense if you can't actually afford a car and are cutting whatever you can so you can still get around, no matter how dangerous it is. Which is a lot of people, unfortunately.

I think even when people can afford winter tires they often don't buy them because they are so used to being sold bullshit they think they are being lied to when they are told they are important.

If you can afford winter tires, get them. Please, if there were any safety or inspection laws at all they would be mandatory. It's literally like driving bald tires in the rain. It's not if you will get into an accident, it's how fast will you happen to be going and what you are gonna hit when it happens if you don't have them.

The price to swap tires is less than the price to fill up on gas. That is barely an expense considering it's just twice a year.

That's what I mean that it's only an expense if you can't actually afford a car and are just forced to buy one even though you don't have the money because of lack of public transportation.

They can't afford to operate it if they can't afford basic maintenance items like tires. It's antagonistic only in the context of liberals saying "well just ride the bus" when there is no bus.

That's about as cleared as Montreal gets in the winter for streets and sidewalks. They try to keep up with it but really you're looking at street and sidewalk clearing maybe twice a day if it's heavily snowing.

I don't remember the story behind this particular one, but I believe it was a sudden snow and ice storm. Should people be driving? Absolutely not, but while Montreal tried to get away from car centricity, it's still mostly car centric.

Oh and in Montreal it's the law to have snow tires on by a certain date, and keep them on to a certain date. Every vehicle there has at minimum snow tires on.

Honestly it's not that bad, their snow removal system is admittedly a marvel of civil engineering... if it wasn't so godawful for the people living there. The snow removal really relies on people having either no cars at all, have a steady 9-5 where there cars will be parked elsewhere anyway, or be rich enough to afford a private, off-street parking. Snow removal happens and one side of a street becomes no parking from 7-7, either am-pm or pm-am. So at any one time, half the spots are gone in the city during the winter. If it's 7am-7pm and you happen to work 9-5 or similar it's not bad: you'll be awake around 7 to move your car if the trucks come by, or after 5 for the same. It's 7pm-7am, better fucking hope you have private parking or no car at all. And if you work odd hours, forget it.
