Same for noise marines. Although they may be a bit more on the hair metal side.
I really want a game that's brave enough to drop the lame "sex and drugs" Slaanesh and bring us the true horror of decadence and excess; The Marching Band of the Damned
80s and 90s era wargame art was awesome. It has glam, but also a hand drawn grittyness.
ShowThe slight imperfections and the amount of shit going on in a single image is what makes 40k war art extra good. The background in this image is more intriguing than the Eldar themselves.
Afaik it's all based on a specific genre of "british colonial troops getting owned" art that was really popular back in the day, where they're all lined up surrounded by (imperialism noises) getting their asses kicked so the folks back home can see how brave and daring these basically prisoners of poverty conscripts were out there murdering people for the glory of English 4pm tea. So the 40k "giant line of dudes kicking ass and/or dying" is that mixed with hair metal, which is why everyone is always lined up line WWI on acid instead of, like, tactics.
Anyway, I much prefer the old, bright, super colorful, very silly art. WH40k is only fun when it's weird and goofy, otherwise it's just (fascism noises)
The transition to digital art has been the worst thing to happen to fantasy/sci-fi/other genre-fiction (horror, mystery, war, superhero, etc.) art.
It's what makes me the most disappointed about Pathfinder/4e/5e art compared to older editions. It's all so boring and bland.
