The US has been funding the government installed by a color revolution, the government in question has support from and supports literal Nazis. There are people in the eastern region of Ukraine that are opposed to this government for various reasons but most importantly is that support for neo-Nazis in the region is much less and those are the places seeking protection from Russia against US backed fascists.
Russia is shit but if they were to actually send military aid it would only be to protect against fascist aggression. I don't even think they will because I doubt Russia gives enough of a shit to actually provoke the US with an invasion but that's how it's being sold.
The US wants to expand NATO to include Ukraine but that would also be a provocation of Russia and China, it's preemtive justification for a proxy war as far as I understand it.
