trump obstructed the hell out of the investigation well past the point of getting criminal charges for it. This was all in the report. But in the report, Mueller used some tortured logic to reach the conclusion that he couldn't actually say trump obstructed justice: because obstruction of justice is a crime, and because trump was the president and couldn't be prosecuted, it would be irresponsible for him to make a legal conclusion like that. He would simply lay out the facts and let congress decide what it meant. So every lawyer in the country (who thought Bush v Gore was a problem) was pulling their hair out while the right was canting 'no obstruction no collusion'.
The collusion stuff was just as big brained. Since 'collusion' wasn't a legal term Mueller decided that the evidence needed to clear the bar for criminal conspiracy, which includes requirements to prove the mental state of the perpetrator that literally can not be proven unless you can interview suspects, which Mueller was unable to do because of aforementioned obstruction. So 'no collusion'
In the end there was a hundreds paged report filled with buckets of evidence of crimes that no one read except William Barr, who trump brought on to kill the investigation early and to seal the report for weeks while they disseminated heavily edited versions of it to completely control the media narrative around and define the outcome. When the actual report came out a reality had already been created that the report was a wet fart and none of the crimes described within actually happened. And now you're taking crazy pills if you paid attention at the time.
