A Patron of Economic Update asks: "I would appreciate hearing your thoughts about how this Canadian Truckers movement aligns with the international workers' ...
Ugh I don't want to get into this and I know all the angry responses are going to make me anxious, but I feel that some people need to hear this.
I should start by stating I haven't listened to this episode, this is a response rather to the common knee-jerk dismissal on this site of trying to find any common ground with CHUDs.
Like a lot of people here are really into the culture war shit just like they and the libs are, and just want to hate a group of people who seem culturally to be the wrong kind of person, and anything else is arguing for red-brown alliance.
This is not a monolithic group, there are lots of types of people in this cohort with all sorts of divergent and contradictory views. They are not all fascists, that is a liberal construction to invalidate reasonable criticism for the way Canada dealt with the pandemic. They're mostly just CHUD shitheads who want to trigger the libs - fucking let them, libs suck. Being able to talk to them without getting triggered by their intentionally scandalous behaviour is good actually, and is a lot better than letting them exist in a vacuum.
And they are wrong about what to do about the pandemic, but most have never really heard a coherent alternative to the liberal half-measure-to-giving-up "plan" littered with bodies because the left has been absolutely nowhere on covid, especially in Canada.
You don't personally have to have the energy to find any common ground and talk to these people, it is fucking exhausting sometimes. Others may have good reason to fear for their safety and that is fine I'm not saying you have any obligation. But if you have the energy and the luxury to not feel like it's dangerous, you might be surprised to hear how willing they are to hear out someone who also fucking hates Trudeau and liberals and doesn't immediately register them as moronic trash.
I am becoming more and more convinced that most terminally online leftists don’t go out and talk to people at all
I spend a lot of time doing food distro in-person + other community programs.
terminally online Western leftist culture is really just a bunch of radicalized people who got their political education from memes rather than reading theory and then applying those knowledge to organize
It’s a start and, I think, a pre-req before theory. The original manifesto was short enough for a laborer to read in their limited free time, right?
At this rate, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the majority of the working class leans far right within the next ten years.
The majority of the working class that is white has leaned far right since Reagan. Settlers does a good job of outlining reasons for this. I don’t agree with all of the book, but there’s a reason telling people to read it is a meme at this point.
Like a lot of people here are really into the culture war shit just like they and the libs
I am not "culture war shit". Anyone who doesn’t view me as a person can fuck off.
I guess I could ask what you mean by culture war shit, but often that’s a euphemism for “I’m willing to betray brown and/or trans people because I am neither of those things”
My hackles are def up right now, but you’re being chill, so thank you for that.
I’m more than fine talking through shit with apolitical dudes who are just reacting to liberals being shitty. I get how peeps could wind up there if the only options they thought they had were pelosi or trump. It’s still fucked up they’d chose trump, but I get why they’d wind up going there.
I am always going to be hella wary of “they’re not that bad” responses, especially about anything antivaxx related, but I get where you’re coming from.
This is what culture war shit is. It's taking the worst aspects of individual members of a group (which I'm not arguing aren't overrepresented in this group) and then ascribing that property to most or all of a group. That way you get to feel like a the good guy by hating them all instead of ever engaging.
Dude everybody hates people who spew vitriol, but that's not what these protests are about and it definitely doesn't represent a meaningful amount of the protest. Dan put it well on Bottlemen when he saud the primary motivation for most of them is "I bet it makes you outraged that I'm here." Like thats what we're dealing with.
Yes everybody saw the one photo of the one flag that was posted everywhere. That's not what the protests are about, and call me crazy but I think the reason there is only one photo I've seen posted 25 times by libs trying to convince Canadians this is 1/6 is because it was only out for like a few seconds. That's not what the protests are like. They fly Canadian flags. They all do.

Most of us still have to work. I speak to literally hundreds of people every single day.

I agree. My point is that the group is heterogeneous, the idea that it's just a bunch of fascists isn't true.

This. They're not condemning the nazis and throwing them out, which means they're accepting them.
If you go into a bar and you see 5 people sitting next to a nazi laughing and charting it up, you have a table with 6 nazis.

I mean, they have a completely different media diet than we do. I'm not sure why you think they'd be convinced there are nazis on their ranks.

You really have no idea what these protests are like do you?

The ones with nazi flags would be a start.
