It’s amazing how everyone’s reaction seems to be making a discourse/struggle session over which commentators were right which were wrong. The debate-brofication of the discourse has been a disaster for the American left’s ability to empathize and act. I want it to be perfectly clear that if your initial reactions to a literal war are “whoaaaa vaush was right and jimmy dore (or whoever) was wrong!!!” And making memes about it, you are genuinely fucked in the head and are a great example about how politics for many people is really just an extension of a narcissistic pre-occupation with themselves rather than something more substantial or unalienating

Yes. That should be the last thing anyone is thinking about pretty much ever

I didn't think Russia was gonna do this, but how could I know? It's not like there was evidence I could trust about the situation, it was all hearsay, and the west already gave 2 dates for an invasion that ended up not happening then

It only makes sense in hindsight where Russia gave warnings for the last month that they would invade if the west didn't make a move about Ukraine and NATO. Guess they weren't bluffing, but if they feel backed into a corner, perhaps that's not so surprising. We're all used to reasoning about global capital in action, but this is regional capital, and the calculus must be different. They decided that a military buffer was more important than the economic cost and here we are. The west gets everything they want anyway even though they were absolutely just guessing and consent manufacturing.

Ukraine wants to join, but NATO exists only to encircle Russia, so Russia doesn't want that. It's never been a done deal, but by pushing in now, Russia avoids a situation where the west is more openly sympathetic to Ukraine. Countries with ongoing border disputes can't join NATO

Makes sense... Except for the part that they were supposed to be against the USSR and not the Russian Federation... Almost like it was never really about communism, so much as having a scapegoat for the failings of capitalism.

The west's/US's decision to not integrate the capitalist Russia as an equal partner in the capitalist world order, and instead relegating them to the imperial periphery, is just another product of western arrogance and moralism.

Yeah, of course. Regional billionaires in Russia are in opposition to the more globalized forced of western capital that would benefit from being able to apply external pressure to Ukraine.

Everyone needs to have the same stance as Mao on war between imperialist powers. "We're against it, but we're not afraid of it", except in the sense of fear for our fellow workers caught in the crossfire of Nazis vs Neolibs vs Reactionaries.

You’re too kind to use an example of two people we already hate here on this site, it makes it feel like a far off issue that other online leftists are doing. In reality we’re doing that right now in this thread about how good our own takes were. I’m literally doing that right now. It’s pretty gross
