I've been thinking more and more about it, and I think it's less insane than it seems.

Putin wants to keep NATO out of Ukraine, as NATO in Ukraine would facilitate destabilization efforts and strangle Russia's ability to exert influence among its neighbors. Diplomatic talks seem to have failed, and with fighting intensifying in Donbas, it was only a matter of time before the trigger needed to be pulled.

In some ways, the libs were right. However, they're only correct because they refused to not cross Russia's explicit red line. US saber-rattling about the inevitability of the invasion helped make it "inevitable."

Now, what would actually be insane would be an Iraq-style occupation.

Agreed. This is all fucked, but like the rest of history, it's a product of processes, not the machinations of "madman."

I was thinking about this possibility. I really hope it doesn't come to that because if that's the case civilians will be suffering for a very long time.

Joining NATO was at 50% for the first time, this ensures it will be the majority position. Not sure if this nips that happening in the bud or makes it a certainty. Either way Putin is taking a sledgehammer to the problem.

This is my opinion as well, and I think goopert is right that this would not have happened if Nord Stream wasn't fucked with because that was a HUGE move by the west.
